cb adams: photographer + writer + creative lifer

CB Adams

I tell stories. Sometimes with words, sometimes with images, sometimes by dissecting a performance under the sharp light of critique. Polymathic by nature, I move fluidly between fiction, journalism, photography, and arts commentary, always in conversation with culture, art, and the unruly human experience.

As a fine art photographer, I compose images with a literary sensibility. Each frame carries its own narrative, charged with mood and subtext. My work, recognized by the Missouri Arts Council and featured in galleries and juried exhibitions across the country, culminates in "True North," my solo exhibition at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild. Fifteen years in the making, it is a meditation on resilience, struggle, and hope in North St. Louis—part documentary, part artistic excavation of place and memory.

Beyond the lens, the written word is both instrument and obsession. My fiction, published in literary journals, has been described as cinematic—language, after all, should immerse, transport, disrupt. Journalism, too, is essential to my practice. I write essays, criticism, and cultural commentary with an eye for precision, a taste for irony, and a refusal to underestimate the audience’s intelligence. Whether breaking down the mechanics of a theatrical performance or tracing the cultural DNA of a photograph, my goal is the same: to make the ephemeral tangible.

With more than four decades of experience in writing, photography, and storytelling, I shape narratives that clarify, provoke, and endure. Journalism has trained me to distill complexity; fiction has taught me to bend reality to reveal deeper truths. Each story—whether an article, an image, or a critique—is an invitation to look closer, think deeper, and engage more fully with the world. Along the way, I’ve been recognized with the Missouri Arts Council’s highest literary honor at the time, the Writers’ Biennial, and named "St. Louis’s Most Underrated Writer" by the Riverfront Times. If the art of storytelling is a dialogue, then I am always listening for the next line.
